National Diploma in Banking and Finance

The National Diploma in Banking and Finance programme is a two-year internationally accredited education programme sponsored by HSBC. The programme prepares nationals of the United Arab Emirates for productive employment and fulfilling careers in banking and finance. The programme offers a wide range of subjects in banking and finance which are considered essential in the workplace. The programme embraces a student-centred approach to learning and incorporates a substantial practical element, including a local work experience requirement at the end of the programme.

The National Diploma in Banking and Finance programme is designed to:

  • Provide learners with the knowledge and skills to be immediately effective in the banking and finance sectors;
  • Develop a learner’s ability to communicate, plan, solve problems, evaluate solutions and work well within a team or as individuals;
  • Meet the needs of the banking and finance sectors by integrating a variety of courses within a single programme;
  • Encourage a sense of responsibility in learners for their own learning and development that will extend into their future employment;
  • Give learners a firm base qualification, which will allow them to progress to further education overseas.

In addition to developing wide-ranging skills in banking and finance, learners in the National Diploma in Banking and Finance programme will develop essential key skills which are integrated into the programme and which potential employers consider to be indispensible in the workplace. The key skills encompass competencies in communication, information technology, application of numbers, working with others, improving own learning, and problem solving.

The National Diploma in Banking and Finance is accredited as a BTEC National Diploma by Edexcel International, a leading worldwide awarding body, offering academic, vocational, occupa¬tional and professional qualifications. Edexcel is a merger of the UK vocational awarding body Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) and the University of London Examinations and Assessment Council (ULEAC). The BTEC National Diploma is a benchmark for vocational education in the UK and is a recognised qualification that is understood and respected by industry, business and commerce throughout the world. The quality of the programme is assured through continuous review and evaluation of content and assessment, together with moderation by Edexcel International.

The National Institute for Vocational Education (NIVE) is an autonomously managed institute, wholly owned by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority of Dubai. NIVE’s mission is to provide flexible, high-quality, life-long, world-class vocational educa¬tion, benchmarked against professional standards designed to meet current and future needs of stake¬holders, govern¬ment, community, employers and individuals in the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf countries. NIVE’s mandate is to develop a highly skilled, employable workforce in accor¬dance with market needs and aspirations of Emirati nationals.

The National Diploma in Banking and Finance is sponsored by the HSBC Bank Middle East Limited, a principal member of HSBC Group (formerly the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation). In February 2008, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, presented HSBC with a special award for its successful Emiratisation programme and ongoing commitment to recruitment and development of Emirati nationals. This commitment continues through HSBC’s strategic partnership with NIVE and Edexcel International to offer the National Diploma in Banking and Finance.
